Northamptonshire has over 40 museums and heritage attractions to suit all tastes. A variety of museums tell stories of towns and villages and include ones in Burton Latimer, Desborough, Earls Barton, Oundle, Finedon, Wellingborough, Rothwell, Wollaston, Rushden, Long Buckby, Daventry, Kettering, Northampton and Abington Park Museum in Northampton.

Sywell Aviation Museum charts the history of the aerodrome and aviation in Northamptonshire, whilst Harrington Aviation Museum depicts secret operations during WW2. For train enthusiasts, the Irchester Narrow Gauge Railway Museum and the standard gauge Northamptonshire & Lamport Railway and Rushden Transport Museum provides enjoyment for all ages. Distinguished historic houses and gardens like Boughton House, Kelmarsh Hall, Lamport Hall, Delapre Abbey and Sulgrave Manor, the ancestral home of George Washington, are all worth a visit. Piddington Roman Villa museum displays results of the ongoing excavation of late Iron Age settlement and the Romano-British villa. The Prebendal Manor Museum can be found at Nassington, whilst the remains of the 15th Century Chichele College are located at Higham Ferrers.

For those interested in 20th Century style why not visit The Charles Rennie Mackintosh House & Galleries at 78 Derngate in Northampton. There are also collections of local significance like The Northamptonshire Regiment & The Northamptonshire Yeomanry Museum. Likewise there is the Northamptonshire Record Office, as well as the Northamptonshire Studies within the county library service. Museums of national significance include the National Waterways Museum at Stoke Bruerne and the 'Boot and Shoe' collection at Northampton Museum. Northamptonshire is also home to the National Fire Services Trust at Weedon and the Naseby Battlefield site, both of these organisations are developing museums and visitor centres.
